Dylan Lewis has been practicing for over 25 years, spending more than 16 of those years in the Litigation Division of American Family Mutual Insurance, and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Dylan has defended more than 600 cases, tried more than 20 jury trials, performed EUOs, and advised fraudulent claim investigations.

Dylan joins Sutton | Booker | P.C. as Senior Counsel in his 28th year of practice.  Dylan was a Senior Manager of the Colorado and Utah offices for the Litigation Division of American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I.  Dylan supervised complex litigation involving American Family or its policyholders in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, Washington, and Oregon.  In that same role, Dylan analyzed and drafted coverage position letters needed in both personal and commercial lines.  Dylan provided legal advice, training and counsel to claims personnel, serving the entire American Family Enterprise.  As a Staff Attorney, Dylan defended more than 600 cases, tried more than 20 jury trials, performed EUOs and advised fraudulent claim investigations.

Before his tenure with American Family, Dylan was shareholder of a private firm where he represented clients in a wide variety of civil, criminal, probate, domestic relations, administrative, real estate, land use, and appeals cases.

Dylan has been featured as a speaker for a variety of CLE presentations for CDLA, CLM, and The Gavel.

  • Jury verdict less than final offer – failure to yield auto accident 4-day jury trial in Pueblo County, Colorado.
  • Jury verdict less than final offer – premises case 2-day jury trial in Denver District Court, Colorado.
  • Jury verdict less than final offer – rear-end auto negligence 2-day jury trial in Arapahoe County District Court, Colorado.
  • Achieved defense verdict in an auto/motorcycle collision.
  • Obtained defense verdict in a premises case with alleged damages of $900,000 against an HOA Board that was later affirmed on appeal.
  • Achieved defense verdict in premises liability matter against a Condominium Association Board with allegations of seven figures in damages.
  • Obtained a defense verdict in a sports negligence case in Boulder County District Court.
  • Obtained a defense verdict in a negligence case arising out of a fire against a Condominium Association Board.
  • Successful replevin recovery, later affirmed on appeal, brought by insurance company to recover a 1967 Shelby Mustang which resurfaced twenty years after the theft claim was paid.
  • Successful recovery of approximately $100,000 of claim payments paid out on fraudulent certifications to perform vehicle testing and cleaning for methamphetamine/fentanyl contamination.
  • Successfully defended insurance company in numerous Colorado UM/UIM arbitrations.
  • Performed more than 30 Examinations Under Oath (EUOs) investigating claims.
  • Advised and participated in fraudulent claim investigations.
  • Issued coverage opinions for both personal and commercial lines.
  • Drafted Amicus Curiae briefs for Ward v. Acuity (2022 employer UIM), Chapman v. Ferretti (2022 protecting BI settlements), Brown v. Long Romero (2021 vicarious liability), Bensman v. BL Restaurant Op. LLC (2020 applying work product protection to claim file), Owners Ins. Co. v. Dakota Station II COA (2018 – appraiser impartiality).
